BT to Upgrade Rural Exchanges in Scotland
The Scottish government is currently engaged in talks with BT and is trying to draft a mutual plan aimed at selection of 50 sites in the country for the purpose of improvement of their infrastructure. The aim is to concentrate on regions where there is absence of faster internet services. It is expected that by next week the final plan for the upgrade will be ready for publication.
Finance Secretary John Swinney expressed his happiness that BT and the Scottish government have been able to recognise and realize the trouble faced by a few rural communities in
Minister for Digital Britain Stephen Timms proclaimed that prior to the next general elections; a 50p broadband levy could be added to the telephone bills of customers. The funds thus raised would in turn be used by the government to develop the best broadband high-speed networks across the
Roxburgh and Berwickshire MSP John Lamont gave several remarks to the BBC regarding the upgrade plan. He said that the population residing in rural areas, especially the Borders, have been working with poor broadband facilities for a long time. He added that there are areas where the facility does not exist at all. He then expressed his happiness at the government’s ability to recognise this problem and come up with an effective solution.
