Broadband Mac-code Rules No More a Requirement, Says Ofcom
The communications industry is about to witness a change in stance of the communications watchdog Ofcom with respect to the MAC-related complaints against internet service providers.
In a recent announcement, Ofcom decided to close the scheme of GC enforcement program that had been in place for over two years. The scheme is to be replaced by another set of rules on broadband migration.
The announcement came during adjudication of a case where a customer was trying to shift from one broadband provider to the other and giving a MAC code for the same. Ofcom decided that in light of the decline in complaints on MAC-related issues, there is not need for maintaining the strict standards.
One of Ofcom’s bulletins clarified the position by saying that the statistics collected from enforcement authorities as well as the decline in the number of complaints clearly show that there is higher compliance with the rules. This has also enabled consumers to make a switch from one provider to the other without having to face much trouble.
Ofcom also mentioned the status of defaulting providers like Pipex, which have been found in breach of the rules on a number of occasions. However, it also mentioned that after serving of a notification to Pipex under the rules, the complaints related to MAC against Pipex has come down considerably. This has led Ofcom to release its close scrutiny on Pipex.
Although the scheme has been officially closed, Ofcom has decided to keep monitoring the MAC-related complaints.
